A dipterocarp is not an individual, but a colony. 

At the base of that colony is its oldest iteration. It provides the support for subsequent iterations.

If, every time life gets to be too much, a dipterocarp simply passes the baton to a new iteration, all the while continuing to exist in its earliest iteration, does a dipterocarp ever die?  For the botanist Francis Hallé, at least, the answer to that is no.

To die is the price we pay to be ourselves.
